Surf Canyon is an adaptive reuse project in Malibu, set on 12 acres where the mountains meet the ocean. As the design director and founder, Lauren led the transformation of a neglected container yard into a vibrant, walkable mixed-use enclave that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The landscape design emphasizes sharing, with dedicated spaces such as a community pizza garden, art studios, and shared workspaces that encourage collaboration and creativity. Since its inception, Surf Canyon has evolved into a thriving hub supporting local businesses through thoughtfully designed shopfronts and communal areas. Working closely with the landowners, Lauren balanced community needs with project feasibility, ensuring a design that minimizes environmental impact while prioritizing beauty. Lauren oversaw the project from initial concept through execution, maintaining adherence to timelines, budgets, and sustainability goals. The material schematic emphasized eco-friendly sourcing and low-impact design solutions while celebrating the natural beauty of Malibu. Today, Surf Canyon stands as a thriving, sustainable space where nature, community, and creativity converge.
